Ellis Old and New

Library in Academic Hall 1887

University Archives, Collection  C:20/8/6

The library was in one of the new wings that were added to Academic Hall in 1885.  We know from the skylights that it had to be on top floor.

The Library itself  is located on the right. If you look closely you can see book cases in the far corner of the room. Next to the door in the center of the room is a row cases with newspapers displayed on the top. To the right of them is the librarian's desk where you would ask for your book. Students probably used the tables for reading and study. The room was multifunctional. A caption from the History of the Library says that: "Commencement dinners were served here."

It is hard to make out, but the second painting from the left looks like a version of this print.
