In order to have EndNote show the references in reverse chronological order, you may have to follow the steps listed below:
- In EndNote program, go to Edit > Output Styles > Open Style Manager.
- In the EndNote styles window select the required output style and click on Edit.
- In the style window, on the left pane, go to "Sort Order" under Bibliography.
- On the right pane, select "Other..." under Bibliography Sort Order.
The Bibliography Sort Order section determines how the bibliography should be sorted. Common options are listed, and you may also configure a custom sort order.
- Once you select "Other..." a Sort Options window pops up.
- Click on drop down for "Sort First by this" and select Date or Year as per your requirement Enter the field names in the order you want the references sorted. (It is not required to use all five options.)
- Click the button to the right of each field to indicate ascending or descending order.
- Click OK.
- Now, this should sort the library according to Date or Year field as you have chosen from ascending or descending order.
- Now save the output style by clicking the File > Save As option.
In the dialog that appears, enter a new name for this modified style, and then click Save.
Please note that any changes that you make to the style in EndNote will not be updated automatically in your Word document. You will have to manually change to the modified style within your Word document.
