The student will use techniques and tools for selecting and narrowing  a topic.

• In-class handout: Choosing a Topic and Search Terms
• Take a broad sample topic and have students help you narrow it by asking "who, what, where, when, why" 
• Create a concept map on whiteboard and have students think of narrower concepts/relationships
• Have students work on the first four questions on the Research Exploration Worksheet 
• In-class handout: Creating a Research Plan
