Databases for Cited Reference Searching

Cited reference searching allows you to locate books and articles that cite a previously published resource. This process allows you to track the research that has been done since the original item was published.

Finding a Scholar's Most-Cited Article

Scopus makes it easy to find a list of documents published by an author and see documents that cited each.

  1. Go to Scopus (http://proxy.mul.missouri.edu/login?url=http://www.scopus.com).
  2. Click the "Authors" tab.
  3. To search by name, enter the last name then the first name in their respective boxes. A middle initial can also be useful for common names.
    1. Authors may have multiple entries. (e.g., Smith, John D. and Smith, J.D. might be the same person)
    2. If they have a common name, you can click "Add an affiliation" to further limit the search.
  4. Find the person you are searching for. Their affiliation is listed to help you identify the correct name.
  5. You can click the number of documents (second column) to view a list of all the document records for that author.
  6. The list of their documents can be sorted various ways, including by date, title, or even highest citation count.
  7. Each record states how many documents it was cited by. Click the number (furthest column to the right) to see the list of all "Cited by" documents.
