Chemistry 2140: Organic Laboratory II

Finding synthesis information in CAS SciFinder: Method 1

Log onto SciFinder-n

  1. Select Substances above the search box   Scifinder search box
     
  2. Enter your substance name, CAS registry number or molecular formula and search.
     
  3. If you get one search result select Reactions located below the chemical substance name in the box and then select Product in the left column.

  4. If you get more than one result, check off the Product box in the left column before selecting Reactions for a particular substance.
     
  5. To view the first synthesis Sort the results by Publication Date: Oldest.  To see the syntheses cited most by researchers Sort by Times Cited. (Note: the sort tool is located at the top of the search results on the right side of the page).

  6. In the list of references click on the article title to view the full entry for a reference including the complete abstract.

  7. To read the article click on the Full Text box and select Find it @ MU.  If the article is available online it will display.  If not you will be provided a link to Request a copy.  Most article requests are filled within 1-2 business days. You will receive an email notification when the article becomes available.

Finding synthesis information in CAS SciFinder: Method 2

Log into SciFinder

  1. Select Substances above the search box  SciFinder screenshot of search box
  2. Enter your substance name, CAS registry number or molecular formula and search.
  3. Click on the box indicating the number of References to view the list of articles on the substanceScifinder screen shot of search results
     
  4. In the left column select Preparation which will be listed under Substance Role then click on Apply. (Note: You may have to click on the link for View All under Substance Role to get the option to select Preparation). Screen shot of SciFinder Prepartion
