Mellon/ACLS Dissertation Completion Fellowships Mellon/ACLS Dissertation Completion Fellowships makes possible a year of supported research and writing, to help students complete their dissertation.
Mellon Fellowships for Dissertation Research in Original Sources The Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) is pleased to offer fellowships generously funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation for dissertation research in the humanities or related social sciences in original sources.
Newberry Library Short-Term Fellowships These short-term fellowships are generally restricted to post-doctoral scholars, Ph.D. candidates, or holders of other terminal degrees from outside of the Chicago area who have a specific need for Newberry collections.
Smithsonian Institute Fellowship Opportunities Some funding opportunities are Institute-wide while others are available for study at individual museums, galleries and centers.
U.S. Department of Education Jacob K. Javits Fellowships This program provides fellowships to students of superior academic ability—selected on the basis of demonstrated achievement, financial need, and exceptional promise—to undertake study at the doctoral and Master of Fine Arts level in selected fields of arts, humanities, and social sciences.
National Endowment for the Humanities Division of Research Programs Fellowships support individuals pursuing advanced research that is of value to humanities scholars, general audiences, or both. Recipients usually produce articles, monographs, books, digital materials, archaeological site reports, translations, editions, or other scholarly resources in the humanities.

Dissertation Fellowships: Diversity

Fellowships of the Consortium of Faculty Diversity in Liberal Arts Colleges Applications are invited in all disciplines of the liberal arts. Fellowship recipients must be either U.S. citizens or permanent residents committed to and willing to contribute to enhancing the diversity of Consortium colleges and their faculties.
Ford Foundation Dissertation Fellowships This year the program will award approximately 30 dissertation fellowships. The dissertation fellowships provide one year of support for individuals working to complete a dissertation leading to a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) or Doctor of Science (Sc.D.) degree. Dissertation fellowships will be awarded in a national competition administered by the National Research Council (NRC) on behalf of the Ford Foundation. The awards will be made to individuals who, in the judgment of the review panels, have demonstrated superior academic achievement, are committed to a career in teaching and research at the college or university level, show promise of future achievement as scholars and teachers, and are well prepared to use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students.
Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute Scholarships CHCI's scholarship opportunities are afforded to Latino students in the United States who have a history of performing public service-oriented activities in their communities and who demonstrate a desire to continue their civic engagement in the future.
Gaius Charles Bolin Dissertation and Post-MFA Fellowships The Gaius Charles Bolin Fellowships at Williams College are designed to promote diversity on college faculties by encouraging students from underrepresented groups to complete a terminal graduate degree and to pursue careers in college teaching.
American Association of University Women Dissertation Fellowships The program provides fellowships for women writing their dissertations and those pursuing postdoctoral research. Research publication grants are also available to enable scholars to complete manuscripts for publication.
American Educational Research Association (AERA) Minority Fellowship The Council of the AERA established the fellowship program to provide support for doctoral dissertation research, to advance education research by outstanding minority graduate students, and to improve the quality and diversity of university faculties.

Dissertation Fellowships: For Members Of...

Phi Alpha Theta National History Honor Society Doctoral Scholarship Entries must be received by March 1, 2015 Phi Alpha Theta is pleased to announce the continuation of its annual Doctoral Scholarship program for advanced study by graduate student members who are pursuing a Ph.D. in History and who have passed general examinations by February 15, 2015. Applicant must be a verified member of Phi Alpha Theta and will be considered for one of the following three awards: The Phi Alpha Theta Scholarship of $1,000 The John Pine Memorial Award of $1,000 Two additional awards of $850 each NOTE: The application must include a letter from your current Department Chair confirming that your are not enrolled in an online program.
Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations Dissertation Fellowship These highly competitive fellowships will support the most promising doctoral candidates in the final phase of completing their dissertations. SHAFR membership is required. Applicants should be candidates for the PhD in a humanities or social science doctoral program (most likely history), must have been admitted to candidacy, and must be at the writing stage, with all substantial research completed by the time of the award.

The following scholarships are available to members of the American Historical Association, which funds them. AHA membership is required to view the pages, as well.

Albert J. Beveridge Grant for Research in the Western Hemisphere Grants are available to support research in the history of the Western hemisphere; individual grants do not exceed $1,000.
Michael Kraus Research Grant (Colonial American History) This grant, in colonial American history, with particular reference to the intercultural aspects of American and European relations, offers cash awards of up to $800.
Littleton-Griswold Grant (U.S. legal history) The AHA offers grants of up to $1,000 for research in U.S. legal history and the field of law and society.
Bernadotte Schmitt Grants (European, Asian, African history) Grants support research in the history of Europe, Asia, and Africa. Individual grants will not exceed $1,000.

Dissertation Fellowships: Race and Gender Studies

Woodrow Wilson Dissertation Fellowship in Women's Studies The Women’s Studies Fellowships are provided to Ph.D. candidates at institutions in the United States who will complete their dissertations during the fellowship year. The Fellows received $2,000 to be used for expenses connected with the dissertation. These may include, but are not limited to, travel, books, microfilming, taping, and computer services.
Frederick Douglass Institute: Pre-Doctoral Fellowship The Predoctoral Fellowship is awarded to a graduate student at any university whose degree contributes to the scholarship in the field of African and African-American Studies. A principal aim of this fellowship is to provide a different intellectual environment that will enrich and expedite the completion of the Fellow’s dissertation. The Fellow will also gain valuable experience through work with the Institute’s director in organizing colloquia, lectures, and other events. There is no teaching obligation.
Radcliffe Institute Dissertation Grants The Arthur and Elizabeth Schlesinger Library on the History of Women in America invites scholars whose dissertation research requires use of the library's collections to apply for research support. Grants of up to $3,000 will be given on a competitive basis to cover travel expenses, living expenses and other incidental research expenses.
Carter G. Woodson Institute for African-American and African Studies Pre-doctoral Fellowships Two-year fellowships for outstanding scholars in the humanities and social sciences who work on a wide array of topics in African-American and African Studies, as well as related fields. .
Marcus Garvey Foundation Research Fellowship This fellowship looks to support doctoral candidates doing primary research in the humanities and social sciences on topics related to Africa and the African diaspora.

Dissertation Fellowships: Early America(s)/Colonial America(s)

McNeal Center for Early American Studies Fellowships The application deadline is 2 February 2015 At least eight new fellows will be appointed for the 2015-2016 academic year, most with stipends of at least $21,000. Fellows receive office space in the Center's magnificent building on the University of Pennsylvania's campus and library, computer, and other privileges at the University. Limited travel funds for research are also available. While no teaching is required for most fellowships, all McNeil Center fellows are expected to be in residence in Philadelphia during the academic year and to participate regularly in the Center's program of seminars and other activities.
John Carter Brown Short-Term Fellowships The John Carter Brown Library will award approximately forty residential research fellowships for the year July 1, 2015–June 30, 2016. Sponsorship of research at the John Carter Brown Library is reserved exclusively for scholars whose work is centered on the colonial history of the Americas, North and South, including all aspects of the European, African, and Native American engagement.
Omohundro Institute Postdoctoral Fellowship Two-year postdoctoral fellowship in any area of early American studies. The candidate’s dissertation or other manuscript have significant potential as a distinguished, book-length contribution to scholarship.

Dissertation Fellowships: Other Special Topics and Periods

Miller Center Fellowship in Politics and History The Miller Center Fellowship program is a competitive program for individuals completing their dissertations on American politics, foreign policy and world politics, or the impact of global affairs on the United States. The program provides up to eight $20,000 grants to support one year of research and writing.
The Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship (ethical and religious values) The Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships are designed to encourage original and significant study of ethical or religious values in all fields of the humanities and social sciences, and particularly to help Ph.D. candidates in these fields complete their dissertation work in a timely manner. In addition to topics in religious studies or in ethics (philosophical or religious), dissertations appropriate to the Newcombe Fellowship competition might explore the ethical implications of foreign policy, the values influencing political decisions, the moral codes of other cultures, and religious or ethical issues reflected in history or literature.
Louisville Institute Dissertation Fellowshp (N. American Christianity) The Dissertation Fellowship program is designed to support the final year Ph.D. or Th.D. dissertation writing for students engaged in research pertaining to North American Christianity, especially projects with the potential to strengthen the religious life of North American Christians and their institutions, including seminaries, while simultaneously advancing American religious and theological scholarship.
U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development programs Doctoral Dissertation Research Grants and Early Doctoral Student Research Grants programs are available only when funded. They have not been funded lately.
Boren Fellowships (language proficiency) Boren Fellowships provide up to $30,000 to U.S. graduate students to add an important international and language component to their graduate education through specialization in area study, language study, or increased language proficiency. Boren Fellowships support study and research in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East.
Adelle and Erwin Tomash Graduate Fellowship (History of Information Technology) The fellowship may be held at the recipient's home academic institution, the Charles Babbage Institute, or any other location with appropriate research facilities. The stipend is $14,000. It is intended for students who have completed all requirements for the doctoral degree except the research and writing of the dissertation.
Henry Frank Guggenheim Foundation Dissertation Fellowship (violence and conflict) These fellowships of $20,000 each are designed to contribute to the support of the doctoral candidate to enable him or her to complete the thesis in a timely manner and are only appropriate for students approaching the final year of their Ph.D. work. Questions that interest the foundation concern violence and aggression in relation to social change, intergroup conflict, war, terrorism, crime, and family relationships, among other subjects.
Harry S. Truman Dissertation Year Fellowship (Truman's presidency and legacy) Dissertation Year Fellowships are intended to encourage historical scholarship of the public career of Harry S. Truman or the Truman era. This fellowship is intended to free a doctoral student from teaching or other employment to facilitate completion of his or her dissertation.
