First Generation @ Mizzou

Library Resources for First Generation Students

Welcome!

Hi! My name is Jill Kline, and I’m a Student Success Librarian. Like you, I was the first in my family to go to college! I spend most of my time in Ellis Library, the biggest library at Mizzou. My job is to support students like you—first-generation students, transfer students, student-athletes, Greek Life members, and many more.

This page (sometimes called a guide or LibGuide) has tips and tools to help you succeed. College can feel overwhelming, but you belong here! Mizzou is full of people who want to support you, and the libraries are a great place to study, get help, and connect with others.

As your librarian, I’m here to listen, help you find information, and support your journey. If you ever have questions, don’t hesitate to reach out! You can email me at jill.kline@missouri.edu.

I’m excited to help you on this journey—let’s do this together!

What is a First-Generation Student?

The University of Missouri defines a first-generation college student as one whose parents do not have a bachelor’s degree from a college or university. This also includes students (before age 18) who have not lived with or received support from a parent who has received a bachelor’s degree.
