Finding Books

  • When searching Discover@MU, you may limit to "UM Books" (all campuses) or by individual library. The UM Books limit is recommended, because it will include books from Ellis Library, the Law Library, the Journalism Library, and the Depository.
  • Expand book search to MOBIUS for more books that can be sent to you at MU.
  • You can only use ebooks if they have an MU online access link.
  • Always check the book's location, note its call number, and check that it is not checked out.

Discover@MU book search and MOBIUS search strategies

1. Subject searching: Here are some subject headings that will work for searches on subjects of interest to this class.

  • Cold War
  • Mao Zedong
  • Deng Xiaoping
  • Stalin, Joseph
  • Guevara, Che
  • Warsaw Treaty Organization (use this instead of "Warsaw Pact")
  • Communist International (use this instead of "Comintern")
  • Socialism
  • Communism (partial synonym for "Maoism")
  • Cuban Missile Crisis 1962
  • Foreign Aid (not its own subject headings but there are several related ones if you start with this one)
  • Decolonization
  • Autonomy and Independence Movements
  • Postcolonialism
  • Latin America History 20th century

2. In an Advanced Search, you can specify one of the above terms, or another subject heading, as Subject, and add additional, focusing keywords on another search line.

Example:

Line 1:  SUBJECT - Communism

Line 2: KEYWORD - Mao*
