About the Board

The Missouri State Board of Health was established March 29, 1883. It consisted of seven members, appointed by the governor for a term of four years.

Duties included:

  • Grant state licenses to practice medicine
  • Study the cause and prevention of disease
  • Enforce rules and regulations to prevent the spread of infectious diseases
  • Operate the Bureau of Vital Statistics
  • Appoint a state health commissioner
  • Remove from office any county health officer who neglects or fails to perform his duties

In 1945, the Sixty-third General Assembly voted to establish a new department that combinded all health and welfare activiites. The Department of Public Heatlh and Welfare became effective July 1, 1946.
