Finding Individuals in Library Catalogs (e.g., MERLIN, MOBIUS, Worldcat)

  • For books about a known person, enter the person's name, last name first, as a subject search (not "topic" or "keyword.")
  • For biographical works on African Americans in a particular state, use African Americans (state) biography, e.g., African Americans Arkansas Biography

Finding individuals mentioned in the text of books using HathiTrust

Several ways to locate mentions of individuals within books using the HathiTrust Advanced Full Text Search:

  • Put the person's name, in natural order, as this exact phrase in Full Text+All Fields, and on the next line, enter the name of the city, county or state where the person lived, again as this exact phrase, in the Title
  • Put the person's name, in natural order, as this exact phrase in Full Text+All Fields, and on the next line, enter the name of an institution or movement with which the person is associated, as this exact phrase,  as either a title or in Full Text + All Fields

Missouri-Specific Records of Individuals
