Jargon and Terms

While navigating this site or interacting with D&D in general, you will run into some jargon and terms you might not be familiar with. This page is dedicated to defining those terms:

  • Wizards of the Cost (WotC) - Wizards is the publisher of D&D and other popular games like Magic: The Gathering and they also have a hand in the Pokémon trading card game. They are a subsidiary company owned by Hasbro.
  • Dungeon Master (DM) - The DM is a role that a person can play in D&D. This person might guide the players through roleplaying as NPCs, providing useful information about the setting, running combat encounters, and narrating story beats.
  • Source Books - Source books are books published by WotC for the purpose of either being reference materials or books that house entire campaigns within them. Some popular and commons ones are listed in the "Source Books" page of this guide
  • Homebrew - This phrase refers to pretty much any content that is originally created by a player. It is more often referred to things that DM's make. For example, a DM could make a homebrew campaign by writing and creating the world and story the campaign is set in themselves. Players may create homebrew content by creating a new race or class that isn't already in the game (of course you will want to get your DM's permission before you run them).
  • NPC - Stands for "non-playable character"
  • Encounter - refers to any game situation where players must expend some kind of resource to solve a puzzle, resolve a conflict, or win a battle.
