Black Veterinary History

Zalk Veterinary Medical Library highlights Black veterinarians and veterinary history from their collection and beyond.

Dr. William Key

Dr. William Key was an ex-slave, self-taught veterinarian, civil war veteran, horse whisperer, and entrepreneur, trained his famous horse with only kindness and patience. His horse, Beautiful Jim Key, was an educated horse who could read, spell, do math, and more. Together they energized the worldwide animal welfare movement, making the phrase “be kind to animals” a household phrase.
