VM-1 & VM-2 Resource Guide

Library resources for first- and second-year veterinary students.

Here are the basics...

First and foremost, we're here to help you succeed in vet school!! Please don't hesitate to ask us a question. You're welcome to walk up or email

Second! There is A LOT of information in this guide and I'm always updating. I recommend bookmarking this page and referring back as needed.

Now, a few key things,

  • We are open 24/7 for CVM Affiliates via card reader. (Mobile IDs do not yet work with outside doors, it may be awhile!)
  • The Library is staffed Monday – Friday: 8:00 am – 5:00 pm.
  • Covered Drinks & Snacks Allowed. Keep it clean! No meals or messy food. We reserve the right to ask you to eat items down in the cafeteria.
  • Shhhh...: As of now, the library is the only designated quiet place in the building. Respect your classmate's need for a quiet study area.
  • Service Animals Only. No pets. (sorry!)
  • Don't leave stuff unattended.

And lastly,

  • Be Kind to One Another 😊

How to access our online resources:

  • Use the links on the Zalk Library home page or from any Libraries page. These links have all been “proxied,” so when you hit a subscribed resource, you’ll be asked to log-in with your SSO.
  • Use the Journal Finder to get to specific journal titles. The Journal Finder will let you know which years are available electronically.
  • We have a ton of ebooks!
  • Really just want PubMed? Bookmark the “MU” PubMed link to be connected to the FindIt@MU information. Also! The Zalk Main Page has a search directly into PubMed.
  • Set your Google Scholar settings to show the FindIt@MU link for easy off-campus access to journal articles
  • Use VPN
  • More information on Off-campus Access to Library Resources

Check out materials with your CVM badge: Your badge is your library card at all the University Libraries.

  • Quick note on Mobile IDs! The library card reader should work but we may ask to see your badge while we get it sorted.

  • Reserves: varies by item, but usually 2-hour loan. If you check out a reserve book within 2 hours of closing time, you'll get the item overnight. Hint: since we are closed on Saturdays and Sundays, if you check out a reserve book after 3:30 pm on a Friday, it won't be due back until Monday morning. Need it longer? Just ask and we'll work with you.
  • Bound Journals: 2 weeks; Unbound Journals: Overnight
  • Books: 4 months. Books can be renewed online via your MU Libraries account. (Login and click My Library Account --> Checkouts

Off-campus access with VPN or your PawPrint: You can get to our online databases, journals, and books from anywhere in the world. Use the MU VPN or start from a Library page and enter your PawPrint (first part of your email address and your email password) when you reach the Libraries Proxy server. More information on off-campus access.

Scanning/Photocopying: Scanning is free! Scan and send to email or USB. Contact a staff member for photocopy codes. ***REMINDER*** Respect the intellectual property rights of others: wholesale photocopying or scanning of books is a violation of copyright. Why you should care

Printing: The CVM-IT computers and the stand-up computers near the entrance all print across the hall. Use your PrintQuota.

We're part of the University Libraries: The Zalk Veterinary Medical Library is one of nine campus libraries. You can request that books and bound journals from other libraries be sent to Zalk Library for pick-up. You can return items from other campus libraries here, and we'll send them back for you.

Need an article from our print collection? Make a request through FindIt@MU or email us at vetlib@missouri.edu

FAQ's

Q: Why are reserve books only for 2 hours?

A: Reserve items are designed to be used as quick reference by you AND your classmates. A 2-hour loan lets everyone have equal access. Reserve books are not meant to be a replacement for buying the book.

Q: Do you have e-books?

A: Yep! And we're getting more all the time! MOST of your reserves should be on eBook. Also, Check out our guide to Veterinary eBooks.

Q: I want a book from Ellis Library. How do I get it? What about a book from UMKC?

A: Find the book you want in the UM LIBRARIES CATALOG (in the blue box), the library catalog for all 4 UM campuses. Click on the Request button. Log in with your username and choose the Veterinary Library as your pick-up location.

Q: I need a journal article that's in print at the vet library. How do I get it?

A: You are welcome to come in and check out the journal or make a photocopy/scan. If you prefer, you can Request a Copy, and we'll scan and send it to you (for free!).

Q: There's a journal article I need, but MU doesn't have it. How do I get it?

A: Use InterLibrary Loan! We'll get the article from another library and send it to you electronically. (Again, free!)
