Perspectives on the ACRL Framework, Comparing Standards, and Creating Learning Activities for Information Literacy: Recent Alternatives to the ACRL Standards

The SCONUL Seven Pillars of Information Literacy

SCONUL stands for Society of College, National and University Libraries.

Identify:  A researcher is able to identify a need for information

Scope:  Can assess current knowledge and identify gaps

Plan:  Can construct strategies for locating information and data

Gather:   Can locate and access the information and data they need

Evaluate:  Can review the research process and compare and evaluate information and data

Manage:  Can organize information professionally and ethically

Present:  Can apply the knowledge gained: presenting the results of their research, synthesising [sic] new and old information and data to create new knowledge and disseminating it in a variety of ways

Please note:  SCONUL developed a "lens" specifically for students doing research in higher education.  While the single words representing the pillars are the same, their definitions and  "understands" and "is able to" statements vary slightly from those in the core model.
