If your D&D group isn't able to meet in person, there are several ways that you can play at a distance
Roll20 - While there can be a bit of a learning curve, Roll20 is a popular website that will allow you to play virtually. You can upload maps for encounters, roll dice, access your character sheet, and utilize a webcam without a secondary software like discord.
Discord - This is another popular software for D&D. It may take some creative problem solving to use it just right for your party. However, all you really need for virtual D&D is a webcam and a microphone.
Running encounters can look different for every DM. These are some popular tools you could try:
Google Sheets - Sheets or Excel are both tools a lot of DMs use because of the freedom to create spreadsheets that fit your needs
D&D Beyond Encounter Builder - While this is meant more for building encounters, you can also use it as helpful reference when managing one as well
Calculator and abacuses - The majority of encounter management is keeping track of numbers. So, it is something that can be done entirely just with pen, paper, and a reliable way to keep track of those numbers.
D&D Beyond Character Creator - Again, a good source for creating character sheets and using them while playing in a session
Tokens - Tokens are a great way to mark a slew of different things while playing D&D. You could use them to track status effects, mark locations you have already explored in a dungeon, or to mark NPCs of interest. And tokens can come in a large variety of ways!
