Generative AI can...
- Be ONE place where you can generate some initial, broad ideas for a paper...but is NOT a good source for detailed information, or truly interesting insight.
- Give some indication of consensus ideas, as exhibited in open-access internet content, platforms like Reddit, internet paper mills, high-quality blogs, possibly published and copyrighted works...but the exact corpus is unknown and the process of text prediction/production is not the same as the process of human information production.
- Produce a mix of accurate and inaccurate information.
- Produce an effect of "bullshit," in the sense that it is information-like content produced without regard to actual truth value. This information-like content, because of its chewed-over origins, is often not interesting, either.
- Self-censor when discussing aspects of the past that go against current social mores.
- Go "off the rails" when addressing topics that are either not discussed very much online, or are discussed online by people with more feelings and opinions than facts online.
- Produce some really tiresome and cliched prose, despite being strong at answering questions about language (at least for languages that are well-represented on the free internet).
