Finding Old Advertisements: Databases

A guide to finding old advertisements from magazines and newspapers.


Here are a few databases that include original, historical ads. Some may require limiting the search to advertisements.

AdForum is an internationally focused database provides access to over 35,000 advertisements in all media, including audio and video. AdForum also provides access to advertising agency information, news, and other information related to the advertising industry.

Illustrated Civil War Newspapers and Magazines
Contains 65,000 pages with articles, illustrations, cartoons and maps drawn from 49 periodicals. Includes advertisements with images. Every page has been scanned to grayscale or color standards at up to 1200 dpi.

ProQuest Historical Newspapers
ProQuest Historical Newspapers digitally reproduces every issue of the New York Times (1851-2006) from cover-to-cover. It provides full page-image and full-text searching of the newspaper, including advertisements.
