Land-Grant University

The University of Missouri was given land-grant status in 1870 through the Morrill Act of 1862.

At that time, most universities exclusively provided the traditional classical studies, and higher education was inaccessible to those who were not wealthy or elite. The mission of the Morrill Act was to expand university offerings to include agricultural and technical education, and to make universities more accessible and practical for the working class.

In 1870, the College of Agriculture and Mechanical Arts was established at the University of Missouri in Columbia to realize this mission. MU Extension also fulfills a critical component of this act by providing vital, practical information to agricultural producers, small business owners, consumers, and other citizens across the state of Missouri.

MOBIUS Borrowing Freeze [April 2024]
MOBIUS borrowing is suspended from April 18-May 22 due to a catalog transition; use interlibrary loan instead.

From now until the end of May, submit requests for MOBIUS items through the MU Libraries' interlibrary loan (ILL@MU) portal.

All existing MOBIUS loans must be returned by May 17th. No renewals are possible beyond that date. If you need a replacement copy in the meantime, submit an ILL@MU request.

Borrowing from MU and UM System libraries in Discover@MU will not be affected. You can continue to request print resources as usual from MU libraries, MS&T, UMKC, UMSL, and depositories.
