Judging a journal's quality

How to find out if a journal is good or reputable.

Questions to ask:

  • Have you read a few of the articles?
  • Would you want your article next to that other article?
  • Do you know anyone who’s publishing there?
  • Who’s on the editorial board?
  • Have you contacted any of the editors to make sure they agreed to be on the editorial board?

Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association Use to check if the publisher is a member.

Directory of Open Access Journals maintains a whitelist of journals which meet certain standards.  A subset of journals which adhere to best practices get a DOAJ Seal of Approval .

The International Academy of Nursing Editors has a vetted list of reputable nursing journals that meet explicit criteria.

BMJ Case Reports

The Health Sciences Library has a subscription to BMJ Case Reports, which includes a waiver of the individual membership fee of $300/year normally required to publish cases in it. 

If you check all the boxes on this checklist, you can submit any of these types of cases:

  • Reminder of important clinical lesson
  • Findings that shed new light on the possible pathogenesis of a disease or an adverse effect
  • Learning from errors
  • Unusual presentation of more common disease/injury
  • Myth exploded
  • Rare disease
  • New disease
  • Novel diagnostic procedure
  • Novel treatment (new drug/intervention; established drug/procedure in new situation)
  • Unusual association of diseases/symptoms
  • Unexpected outcome (positive or negative) including adverse drug reactions
  • For global health case reports, use this checklist
  • For images in case reports, use this checklist
