COMPUTER SUPPORT AT LAW

MU Law IT Suite (224K): Scott Greathouse, greathouses@missouri.edu or by phone at 573-882-8302

Help Desk (Division of Information Technology (DoIT)): 882-5000

COMPUTER REPAIR

TigerTech is located in the basement of the MU Student Center, on the east end. They can repair Dell and Apple computers, regardless of where you purchased the computer or whether it is under warranty.

There are numerous computer repair places in Columbia, including Best Buy and Columbia Computer Center.

If your laptop has a problem now, please try to get it fixed ASAP or replace it. You do not want to have to take your finals with a laptop that randomly turns off or crashes.

Scott and other MU workstation support techs cannot work on your personal laptop, but Scott may be able to give you some advice if you have a problem with your computer.

COMPUTER RECOMMENDATIONS

Computers running Microsoft Windows 11 are the most compatible with MU systems. Apple Mac laptops almost always work fine as well. If you are already accustomed to one or the other, please do not attempt to switch. Other operating systems are not supported at MU or at Law. Your laptop's hard drive should be at least 256 GB; preferably, 512 GB or larger. Dell and Apple computers are available at TigerTech.

MICROSOFT OFFICE

All facutly, staff, and enrolled students are eligible for a free copy of MS Office 365, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and Outlook. It can be downloaded by logging into office.comLinks to an external site. with your MU credentials. After logging in, find the button near the upper right corner that says, “Install apps.”

BACKUP YOUR DATA

Each year several people at Law lose hours of work due to computer viruses, dead laptop hard drives, corrupted email attachments, and broken USB thumb drives. Use at least 2 storage options to back up all your important files. The easiest way to do this is to use OneDrive, but please make sure you understand how it works. Just having it installed is only the first step.

PLAN FOR YOUR EXIT

Someday, you will no longer be at MU Law. Please start planning for that day now by making sure that important files and information are available to your (appropriate) colleagues at MU Law, and do not use your MU email as a data repository. Taking this approach will also allow for stress-free absences due to illness or personal emergency.

CLASSROOM TECHNOLOGY

If you plan to teach or present in a classroom that you have never used before, you are required to arrange for a short in-person briefing from Scott on the technology in that room. This will take no more than 15 minutes. In addition, briefings on the technology in each room are available in Teams within the CLAW - EVERYONE group, inside the Information Technology folder. These instructions are offered in 2 formats for each room: "Instructions" and "Troubleshooting". If you have a problem with a room, it is recommended that you call Scott first (at 882-8302) before you start trying to fix it yourself. Under extreme circumstances, Michelle can provide you with a substitute room.

Sample Language for Disclaimer

Consider using some version of this language if your libguide is the same name as a law school course:

Please remember that supplemental materials are meant to enhance, not replace, the assigned classroom material.
Some professors recommend against secondary sources due to the danger of students attempting to short cut doing the hard work themselves, thus delaying the skill of “thinking like a lawyer.”  If you have a question whether a particular supplement may be useful as a classroom or exam prep aid then ask your professor for guidance.  And, as always, you can ask a librarian for assistance.
