Special Collections has a number of important early works relating to the study of ancient Greece and Rome in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, and especially the material culture of these civilizations. These works—which are often in multiple, lavishly illustrated volumes—cover what might broadly be called 'antiquities', and include:
Special Collections also has a number of works illustrating the history and development of archeology. This includes a large number of archeological reports, surveys, guidebooks and related materials covering the ancient civilizations of Greece and Rome, as well as Egypt, the Levant, and Mesopotamia. Particularly well represented is the archeology of the town of Pompeii, with holdings dating from the 18th to the 21st century. Also well represented are the archeological excavations of Heinrich Schliemann.
