OER: Open Educational Resources

Designed for educators at the University of Missouri, this guide covers ways to find and create Open Educational Resources

How can the University Libraries help you with OER?

University Libraries

"The open education movement is a sharing movement, and it speaks to libraries because, at its core, the basic concept is that the more materials are shared, the more the world is bettered."
- Jensen & West

The University Libraries have information and systems in place that faculty can use to make course materials freely shareable for students:

  • OER Consultation
Faculty who are new to OER and want assistance in narrowing down options are encouraged to consult with Grace Atkins, OER & Outreach Librarian, and/or your subject specialist librarian.
  • Course Reserves
Faculty can place electronic and print material on reserve in order to ensure that all students in the class have access to it. Please submit request forms as soon as you can, especially if it includes items not already in our collection.
  • Finding Textbooks in the Merlin Catalog
MU Libraries does not automatically purchase textbooks used in classes, however, some textbooks may be available for checkout through the library.
  • Copyright Guide
Librarians can provide you with information, guidelines, and best practices on copyright and fair use. Whether you are managing the copyright on your own material or determining how to use the creations of others, this guide may have the answers to your questions.

MOspace: MU Institutional Repository

The MOspace Institutional Repository is an online repository for creative and scholarly works and other resources created by faculty, students, and staff at the University of Missouri--Columbia and the University of Missouri--Kansas City. MOspace makes these resources freely available on the web and assures their preservation for the future.

For projects with video and audio components, the MU Digital Library platform provides the University of Missouri community with a secure space to store, preserve, and share various forms of digital content.
