This program was created to provide more current estimates of selected income and poverty statistics than those from the most recent decennial census.
Estimates are created for school districts, counties, and states. The main objective of this program is to provide updated estimates of income and poverty statistics for the administration of federal programs and the allocation of federal funds to local jurisdictions.
Education finance data include revenues, expenditures, debt, and assets (cash and security holdings) of elementary and secondary public school systems. Statistics cover school systems in all states, and include the District of Columbia. Data are available in viewable tables and downloadable files.
The Census Bureau creates special tabulations of decennial census data by school district geography. These tabulations provide detailed demographic characteristics of the nation’s public school systems and offer one of the largest single sources of children’s demographic characteristics currently available.
School Enrollment data are collected annually in the October Current Population Survey (CPS) for the Nation. More detail on school enrollment for states, metropolitan areas, and more specific geographies is collected in the decennial census. Check under our American FactFinder for these data.
