Anatomy of a Murder

Anatomy of a MurderTitle:  Anatomy of a Murder (1959)

Director:  Otto Preminger

Location:  MU Law RESERVE PN1997 .A538 2000

Legal Angles:  Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, Estate Law, Evidence,

Genre:  Crime, Drama, Mystery

Cast:  James Stewart, Lee Remick, Ben Gazzara, Arthur O'Connell, Eve Arden, Kathryn Grant, George C. Scott, Joseph N. Welch

Synopsis:  A riveting courtroom drama of rape and premeditated murder is brought to life with an all-star cast in the suspenseful and highly-acclaimed Anatomy of a Murder. Nominated for seven Academy Awards including Best Picture (1959), the film pits a humble small-town lawyer against a hard-headed big-city prosecutor. Emotions flare as a jealous army lieutenant pleads innocent to murdering the rapist of his seductive, beautiful wife.

Summary:  Paul Biegler is a small town lawyer who recently had been the local prosecutor until he loses an election and opens his own practice. With a lack of clients, he spends a lot of time fishing, playing the piano, and hanging out with his alcoholic friend, Parnell McCarthy. When a murder takes place in a trailer park on the outskirts of town, he is asked to defend Lt. Frederick Manion who admits to having killed Barney Quill, a local bar owner who allegedly raped his wife. Biegler and Manion decide that his best defense is temporary insanity, and they devise a plan for their defense. The case is both prominent, with the State's Deputy Attorney General personally prosecuting the case and lurid, given the rape and the sexual nature of much of the testimony. Biegler must find a way to convince the jury Manion was temporarily insane, but they are having a hard time finding evidence to support their claim.

Legal Elements:  The entire movie follows a case from the beginning to end. Nearly half of the movie takes place in the courtroom, with the other half involving gathering of evidence and other pretrial procedures. This movie would be great for either a trial practice or criminal law class.
