Census enumerator talking with a family

For the 1970 census, most inhabitants of the United States received questionnaires in their mailboxes. Households completed the questionnaires and returned them (by mail) to the U.S. Census Bureau. Households that did not receive a mailed questionnaire (or those that did not return their questionnaire) were visited by an enumerator. The enumerator completed a questionnaire for the households during a personal interview. (link)
