EndNote for Windows

Guide to setting up EndNote for Windows

Manually attach PDF's to citations

If you have a saved PDF (or any other type of file: Word, Excel, etc.), you can attach it to a reference in EndNote. There are two ways to do this:

Paperclip Method:

1. Click on the reference to highlight it. In the preview plane on the right side of the screen, click the paperclip icon.

  1. Choose the file you would like attached and click “open.”

  2. Save your changes. You can either click on the “save” icon on the PDF view toolbar, or you can click away from the reference and choose to save when prompted.

Drag and Drop:

  1. Simply open the file location on your computer, and drag and drop the file onto the reference in EndNote.

Note on where things are saved:

Once you attach a file into EndnNote, a copy of the file is saved in EndNote’s PDF folder. So, if you attach/import a file saved on your desktop into EndNote, you can now delete the file on your desktop.
