Native American Studies: Books

Subject Headings

Most library catalogs include standard subject headings (assigned by the Library of Congress) for books.  Using a subject search will help you avoid getting books about, say, the Chickasaw Wildlife Refuge, when you are looking for books on the people called Chickasaw.  Note that tribes whose names closely resemble state names are often identified with the state.

  • Chickasaw Indians
  • Illinois Indians
  • Indians of North America - Missouri
  • Iowa Indians
  • Missouri Indians
  • Ojibwa Indians
  • Osage Indians
  • Oto Indians
  • Quapaw Indians
  • Siouan Indians

There are many other subject headings of interest (here are a few of the headings with most books attached to them), but short of memorizing them, it can also be smart to include these words and phrases in advanced searches that allow you to search for words within a field.
